Where Is This Beauty They Speak Of
Art And Poetry by Jim Nasium
They say beauty is everywhere
if you just take the time
to look around for it
I don't understand them
both of my eyes are wide open
and I just can't see it
Where are they looking
what can they see that I can't see
where is this beauty they speak of
Do they see beauty
on back street corners
late at night while waiting all alone
Is there beauty in the alleys
near trash cans piled high with history
created by strangers
Is there beauty in the ghetto
while waiting in a long line
for food stamps and free orange cheese
Where is the beauty in fighting off would-be-thieves'
young rude boys and wanna-be gangsters
while walking home with a few groceries
I see no beauty in the six locks on my door
or the wrought-iron bars on my windows
with dark shades drawn for privacy
Perhaps there's a beauty that I can't see
in a war-torn third-world town
where dead are lying in the street
How can they see beauty in a hungry child eyes
belly swollen and puffed out from hunger
with flies buzzing all over their infected wounds
Where is the beauty looking at the homeless
or the handicapped and forgotten war heroes
that line our streets begging for spare change
Maybe there is something wrong with me
no matter how hard I try
I can not see beauty in everything
They say that there is beauty all around us
if we just take the time to look for it
but I don't believe them...
