The Dancer Upstairs [and The Red Shoes] A Poem by Jim Nasium
The Dancer upstairs is always dancing
I can hear her dance across the room
some times she dances in her garden
mostly when the flowers are in bloom
I watch her dance when ever I can
she's so graceful as she spins around
I know if I tried to do what she does
I'd get dizzy and just fall down...
The Dancer upstairs dances each morning
she'll be dancing every afternoon
some times she's out by the lake at night
dancing under the stars and moon
I never hear music playing
yet she seems tuned into a beat
the dancer upstairs is so pretty
she's long dancer legs and tiny feet
The Dancer upstairs is middle-aged
she lives up there all alone
from what I know about her
she don't have a computer or a telephone
they say she danced with PhillyDanceCo
and was at one time a local star
until that night she bought The Red Shoes
while drinking down at the local bar
The Dancer upstairs can't stop dancing
she can't stop to sleep or to eat
It wasn't until just this morning
I saw The Red Shoes on her feet
then I figured out what was going on
why The Dancer upstairs danced days away
I held her tight and took the shoes off her feet
"thank you" was all she could say
The dancer upstairs don't dance no more
but she and I will never forget
how she danced away the night and day
and never had even one regret
ever since she bought The Red Shoes
until just earlier today
now she can finally eat and sleep
since I took The Red Shoes away...
