She
A Poem by Jim Nasium

She was young when I first met her
just wanted to get away
I told her I'd like to date her
she asked me if she could stay
the months passed us by so quickly
before we knew it three years had passed
we were happy to still be together
no one we knew thought it would last

She loved to cook and keep house
enjoyed laundry and shopping for food
she was always dressed up so nicly
always polite and never rude
a wild cat in the bed room
honest trust worthy and true
I found myself falling in love
and didn't know what to do

She went with me to my island home
tried to live a different kind of life
all she talked about was getting married
having children and being a wife
her long red hair glowed in the sunshine
the day she said she was going away
and that marrying her was the only thing
that would get her to stay

She came by my home a few year later
to thank me for all that I did
I thanked her in return
for keeping my secrets hid
we decided to go get some dinner
we talked about old times and friends
that night we slept together
seems the story never ends

She told me she really loved me
had no other since she went away
I told her I loved her too
but I love my truck, so what can I say
I'm not into the things she was into
way too young to settle down
never the less it was fun being with her
so I asked her to hang around

She asked me about my illness
I told her I fight every day
exercise and do all that I can
to try to keep it's growth at bay
she touched my scared belly
rubbed her hand over the scar on my hip
bent over and gave me a deep kiss
very firmly on my lip

She stayed for a few days that summer
I haven't heard from her since then
she was not only an old lover
but she was a special friend
there's been no other since like her
but then again that's not to say
I don't enjoy my new friends
each one'a them loves to play

She was young when I first met her
just wanted to get away
I told her I'd like to date her
so she asked me if she could stay
the months passed us by so quickly
before we knew it three years had passed
we were happy to still be together
no one we knew thought it would last...
